Any writer attempting to write and publish for first time faces several hurdles. Shakespeare was derided during his time, belittled because of his humble birth. He came from a small provincial town, where he could not have received a good enough education to have written the plays was/is one of the most common accusations against him that doubts the genuineness of his authorship. It is only much later that Shakespeare is canonized and has today become the most known name in literature. This is only to say that writers need not come from a aristocratic origin or from a literary background. In our own context, Jnanpeeth awardee Girish KArnad in our times is a trained mathematician, Sivakami, the Tamil writer is an IAS officer. Literature also need not be limited to the written, an Illiterate person can and does compose songs if not novels. Folk literature is the best example for this. Is there a need to say all this? Given that the author of this work BSM Kumar is an engineer by profession gives him more credibility as an author than someone who was trained in literature or the arts.
What is Broken Lands…Silhouettic Dialogues all about? In one sentence, the work is about a search, a search within oneself, a search for the self, a search for a spirituality that does not limit itself to religion or indeed a search for a spirituality that does not take religion into consideration. It is about the relevance of art to our own selves and to our own bodily senses. It is an work that places the individual at the centre for the world. For, the author seems to believe that every individual is worthy of being the centre. Except that the language of his writing suggests that this worthy individual is almost always a male, the poet is always the male and the muse is always the female, reflecting the male-centrality of much literature till date, the work appears to spread a message of equality / centrality of every human being.
The language of the work is not easy for commoner. Consider this line from page number 6. “Roots of life are striking with dreams and their pathos is wound, squeezes the soundness and brushes the searches of restful flesh”. What do we make of this? This leads us to the question of how we can classify the work. The reader will notice that I have been using the word ‘work’ to refer to this piece of literature. In today’s literary jargon, literature is best referred to as ‘work’ or ‘text’. In this understanding, it is possible to include all genres, all forms, all kinds of literature without excluding newer forms or genres like the one presented to you here. BSM kumar’s work is definitely not a novel, not a drama, not a poem, or a short story. It has a form of its own. At best, we can classify it has a poetic prose. This text therefore is not conventional in terms of form or in terms of content. This is what makes it difficult to understand at the first reading. But once we try to get into the heart of the work, we see only too clearly what the author intends to do. Although meaning in anything can be interpreted in a number of ways, although meaning can be deconstructed from various positions to say that there is no one meaning at all, Kumar succeeds in connecting to people who like him believe in looking for all meanings through the search of the self, through the search of the soul. That the poet whose search concluded in a positive note by the end of the work suggests optimism in today’s Broken Land. That the poet has a clarified vision by the end of his journey reverses the gloomy narration thoughout the work.
Although ideologically contestable, I commend BSM Kumar’s work for its genuine concern and hard work. I wish him all the best and wish that he will come up with more work that can be read by all and enjoyed by everyone who reads.
